On May 22, 2025, the Organization for the Prevention of Violence and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, supported by the National Canadian Chiefs of Police – Hate Crime Task Force and the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, provided hate crime training for police and security first responders.
The training is designed for front-line members who may respond to calls involving hate crimes or hate incidents. The goal of the workshops was to ensure that front-line officers possess a foundational understanding of this distinct form of criminal offending, its connection to violent extremism, and its impacts on victims and their broader communities. The training also aimed to share evidence-based recommendations for operational best practices.
Approximately 65 members from a dozen agencies from northern Alberta attended this important training. The day was a great success, with two distinguished speakers from the Edmonton Police Service and the RCMP providing welcoming and opening remarks. Additionally, the event featured five presentations on various hate crime topics, facilitated by the Edmonton Police Service, the Organization for the Prevention of Violence, and the RCMP. Thank you to all those who attended!
