On August 20, 2025, the Organization for the Prevention of Violence (OPV) and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, supported by the National Canadian Chiefs of Police – Hate Crime Task Force and the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, put on a full day hate crime training workshop for the University of Alberta Protective Services and student and faculty supports.
The training was designed for U of A personnel who respond to and manage events involving hate crimes, hate incidents and violent extremism. The goal of the workshop was to ensure foundational understanding of this distinct form of criminal offending, its connection to violent extremism, and its impacts on victims and their broader communities. The training also aimed to share evidence-based recommendations for operational best practices. Distinguished speakers presented from the Edmonton Police Service and OPV provided presentations on various hate crime topics.
